Grading For Physical Education.
Grading is mainly focused on Participation, Effort and Sportsmanship. Skill is taken into account under effort. All student will start out with a 100 points and will be assessed based on the following:
-3 points - No participation for not dressing, no sneakers or for sitting out of class due to poor behavior

-1 point - Poor effort in a class
-1 point - Not following directions
-1 point - Poor behavior but continued to participate
-1 point - Unexcused late to class
-1 point - Not removing jewelry for class.
+1 point - Exceptional Sportsmanship, Participation or Effort.

-2 points - Demonstrates a good understanding of the concepts taught in class.
-3 points - Demonstrates an average understanding of the concepts taught in class.
-4 points - Demonstrates a poor understanding of the concepts taught in class.
-5 points - Demonstrates little or no understanding of the concepts taught in class.
-1 to -10 points - Semester effort grade. Deducted during the semester for when a student does not put out an effort during a class.
There is no extra help or class make-ups to raise grades. If students are not able to participate in enough classes, due to illness or injury, to be properly evaluated then they will receive "Medically Excused" for a grade.
All students will come to class prepared and without jewelry. Sneakers are necessary to participate safely. Any clothing that may injure your child or another child must be removed. This includes earrings. Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 will not change for class and will wear the clothes they wore to school. Grades 7 and 8 will have gym lockers and will change for class. All students must be prepared for cooler weather because classes will be held outside. Usually we stop going outside after Thanksgiving break and begin again when the weather gets warmer in the spring.
If your child needs to wear earring because they can not remove them and put them back in safely they will be given until Christmas vacation (3rd Graders) or 3 weeks to practice. If the ears are freshly pierced then the child will have 6 weeks to leave them in. Parents must also send in a note explaining why the earrings must stay in and it must be approved by the nurse.
If a child is excused for class due to illness or injury they must also bring in a note from home and it must be approved by the nurse. If a doctor excuses a child from participating then only a doctor's note can allow the student to participate in class.
I believe that if a student participate in class, gives their best effort and demonstrates good sportsmanship they will achieve the goals of the program. My classes are designed so that all children are involved in challenging activities that will allow them to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
